Participants will learn how to saggar fire ceramic pieces in an aluminium saggar using a raku kiln. Participants are required to bring their own bisque fired pieces for saggar firing. 2-4 hand-sized (or 1-2 larger sized) pieces would be suitable for the workshop. Pieces can be made from Raku clay but also any kind of clay (eg. Walkers 10) will still work. More robust (rather than delicate) pieces are best suited for the saggar firing, as the extreme temperature changes in the raku kiln can sometimes crack works. In the first part of the workshop participants will decorate their pieces using various organic materials and then wrap them in an aluminium saggar. In the second part of the workshop, participants will learn how to use the raku kiln and fire their pieces. At the end of the workshop participants will leave with their pieces having been saggar fired. The pieces are suitable for decorative use but not for eating or drinking from.
