Coptic bookbinding is an age old and versatile building block to bookbinding.
A foundation skill for artisans to make their own journals and artist books.
The chain stitched spine allows the book to lay flat whilst working in it and the cover can be what ever you desire, recycle some sketchbook backing cardboard, wrapped in mono prints from previous art adventures or fabrics, it will be a sturdy companion to your next art adventure.
We will be working with cartridge paper in an A5 format, great travel size for outdoor sketching or note making.
You will be guided in making the page groups known as ‘signatures’ and the creation of the front and back covers.
The assemblage is with a coptic stitch technique that creates a robust spine with a waxed thread.
You are welcome to bring your own materials for making the front and back cover if you wish to customise your book.
