The Stitch Has a Story: Basketry in Context
Come and spend an evening with Alice Springs-based artist Kirrily Jordan, exploring the wonderful world of basketry, weaving and the stories held within a stitch.
In this hands-on 3.5-hour workshop, Kirrily will introduce you to four different coiled basketry techniques from around the world. As you make your own mini basket, you’ll discover the fascinating histories and cultural connections behind these techniques, and the ways basketry knowledge is passed from one maker to another.
Kirrily is bringing her latest research to Darwin, sharing insights from her research project Mapping Mariposa: Bringing Australian Basketry Education into the 21st Century, supported by the Australian Government Regional Arts Fund.
Whether you’re completely new to basketry or already love to weave, this is a lovely opportunity to slow down, learn something new and spend an evening making with your hands.
You’ll leave with your own mini basket, plus a weaving kit to continue exploring at home.
