Jemma Shimeld is an emerging artist based in Darwin, whose vibrant acrylic paintings capture the joy, colour and atmosphere of her new surroundings. Originally from Newcastle, NSW, Jemma recently relocated to the Northern Territory after working as a full-time high school Visual Art teacher. This transition has allowed her to dedicate more time to her own creative practice, drawing inspiration from the striking landscapes and unique light of the Top End.
Her work centres on the beauty of the Darwin environment, with a particular focus on sunsets as moments of reflection and gratitude. Through expressive use of colour and light, Jemma creates joyful landscape paintings that act as visual diary entries—each one documenting her experiences, memories and evolving connection to place.
Jemma’s paintings invite viewers to share in her sense of wonder and appreciation, offering a space to reflect on their own memories and emotional connections to landscape. This body of work celebrates not only the physical beauty of Darwin, but also the personal transformation and renewed creative energy that has come with calling it home.
