5 - 28 July 2019

Opening 5:30pm, 5 July at Tactile Arts Gallery

If I were a street, I would not be a cul-de-sac. (I’d be a dirt road with endless lands on either side).

'Creating this collection of paintings and textiles was my way of trying to understand the link between home and identity, feelings of claustrophobia and the veracity of ones internal dialogue 24/7, (whilst wondering if one is an unreliable narrator) and the intangible orienteering game of trying to locate ones’ dormant traits.

Kasia Tons is a Textile Artist currently based in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). She creates colourful, chaotic soft sculptures, wearables and 2D pieces with obscured personal mythologies entwined with more universal themes of home, identity, belonging and movement. Drawing inspiration from daily life, memories and adventure books, her artistic influences are Judith Scott, Nick Cave and Anthony Stevens.

Hand embroidery has been central to her work since first picking up a needle and thread in 2006, but of recent years she has been actively exploring the use of larger movements with greater energetic output both as a physical expression for her feelings but also as a way to combat the RSI that comes with years of doing small, repetitive movements typical of embroidery.

Clockwise from top left: Cluster, textile bundles and found objects, variable sizes, 2018/19; Unit, acrylic paint on wood board, 30 x 23 cm, 2019; Introvert, hand embroidery, 21 x 17 cm (irregular), 2019; Tarpaulin Diary, hand embroidery on tarp, 80 x 39 cm (irregular), 2018/19; Human, hand embroidery, applique and beading, 37 x 31 cm (irregular) 2018/19; If I were a street, mixed media on tent canvas, 160 x 87 cm, 2019.
