Welcome to: Youth Vibe Creative Workshop - January 2025

Day 1: Tuesday 21st January – 12 noon until 4pm
Printmaking: Silk screen on paper with Katie Bradley
Day 2: Thursday 23rd January – 12 noon until 4pm
Decorative ceramic tiles with Dawn Beasley
Hosted by: Tactile Arts
19 Conacher Street, The Gardens (It’s the complex of buildings with the colourful mosaic, to the left as you enter MAGNT carpark).
Day 1: Silk screen on paper with Katie Bradley in the Tactile Arts printmaking studio
During this workshop participants will explore silk screen printing and marbling to create multiple images on paper. You will learn how to make a RISO screen of your own design before experimenting with direct printing and transfer printing (using a gel plate) onto a range of papers including marbled paper that you will have made yourself.
Using specialist equipment in Tactile Arts’ dedicated printing studio, you will be guided through all the creative processes involved, and you will leave with your own silk screen, a collection of prints and an understanding of how to screen print an artwork showcasing your own design, and how to use marbling to create a unique print surface.
Day 2: Decorative ceramic tiles with Dawn Beasley in the Tactile ceramics studio.
During this workshop participants will be guided through a range of different surface design techniques for clay. Starting with direct printing using layers of leaves and underglaze pigments before moving onto sgraffito, stencilling and screen printing (incorporating the RISO screen made in the day 1 workshop).
Using specialist equipment in Tactile Arts’ dedicated ceramics studio, you will be guided through the creative techniques involved in the making of a series of stoneware drink coasters that showcase your own designs. You will leave with a sound understanding of four different clay surface techniques that can be used alone or in combination to create decorative ceramics. The tiles will be fired and glazed after the workshop and will be ready for collection 10 days later.
Pre-workshop preparation:
To make the most of these workshops it would be worth bringing some sketches or images of ideas to influence the work you will produce. Google ‘one colour silk screen prints’ and ‘sgraffito pottery’ to get ideas for what works well and to gain inspiration for your own design. You might even try using Copilot ai using prompts such as ‘design a black and white image of a (insert your own word here) suitable for sgraffito’. Just make sure you research some real examples first so you can judge if Copilot understands the brief 😊
Don’t worry, we will have example pieces and resources to help you succeed!
