with Danny Murphy

Danny Murphy was born in Katherine in the Northern Territory. He was raised with his 3 brothers on a farm on the banks of the Katherine River which has become his permanent home and a great influence on his work and outlook. Danny’s mother Ruth was also potter, and this inspired him to study ceramics at Rostrevor College in 1980 and then taking up further studies at Underdale Art School, Stanley Street Art School and Magill Hartley College. Since 1988 Danny has been potting full time, dividing his time working at Studio Potters SA in Adelaide and his home studio in Katherine. Working alongside his mother Ruth, Danny has mastered his craft and developed his own unique style of pottery. Along with the Katherine river and nearby Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), his influences are the native trees, rustic landscapes, sandstone outcrops, red sand and spinifex of Northern and Central Australia.

Guided by a natural, spontaneous and unpretentious style and technique and using a variety of clays sourced from around Australia, Danny constructs terracotta pots and objects with great variation in size, colour, patterns, brushwork and textures. He has 4 kilns, 2 built by himself, preferring to fuel fire for a more diverse range of finishes. His seaweed coated creations have become his signature and most recognisable items and have resulted in many prizes and are highly sought after by the public. Danny has been a member of the Studio Potters SA in Adelaide since 1990 and has exhibited solo and jointly on many occasions in the Northern Territory and South Australia. His work is held in numerous private, public and corporate collections throughout Australia and overseas. Danny has won numerous awards for his work and has been profiled in magazines such as the Journal of Australian Ceramics and more recently in an online Documentary on Channel NT.  He also presents his work on Instagram @ dannymurphy8148

Danny will be demonstrating a broad range of skills with this hands on masterclass including coil and throw, making pots bigger, bowls, platters, double walled pieces, bottles, teapots, lidded pots and throwing and altering cylinders. The weekend promises to be a relaxing and fun time with participants trying a range of techniques. Danny will assist with problems, shortcuts and general advice and questions to do with their pottery practice including throwing, recycling clay, terra sigillata, glazing and lots of decorating ideas.
