with Geri Barr

In this masterclass, which coincides with her solo exhibition as part of the ‘Listen, Hear’ project, artist in residence Geri Barr will share with you her extensive research and experience of immersive dyeing with eucalyptus leaves, bark and flowers. An abundant and environmentally friendly dye material, there are 57 eucalyptus species in the Top End alone so we have plenty of variety to choose from.

You will learn how to process the plant material to get the best results plus the additional process to ‘shift’ the dye to encourage different colours from the same dye pot giving you a range of hues for dyeing. Using this exciting dyeing method, you will dye your own beautiful silk scarf to wear, naturally dyed from the secret colours of the Top End Australian bush inspiring others with your creativity.

“My art communicates a sense of calm with gentle artworks, the colours chosen by nature and created by the process of hand dyeing cloth. The resulting beautifully natural colours of gold, tan, deep brown and ochre showcase the secret colours of Australia’s native trees.

Respectful listening and acknowledgment of the traditional owners of the lands I work on and obtaining approval for collection of material is paramount to my art practice.”    Geri Barr

*Always ask for permission and seek out local laws for collection of native flora in the area you are in if collecting from anywhere other than private land.
