Course Outline: The aim of this course is to impart to students the basics of kiln formed glass. Information handouts will be kept to a minimum; students should be prepared to take notes.
First Sunday: Slide show and discussion of the basic principles of glass fusing. Instruction will be given in the use of basic glass tools.
Selection of molds, preparation of kiln shelves. Cut and assemble glass for first project. Fire kilns. Demonstration of the technique of glass combing.
Second Sunday: Remove first project from kiln. Discussion about outcome of firing. Prepare subsequent projects and load second projects into kiln. Including jewellery pieces, such as earrings and brooches and pendants, if you wish. Fire kiln for second project piece. Demonstration of vase making.
Third Sunday: Further discussion of various techniques used in the practice of kiln formed glass. Demonstrate a “Pot drop”. Instruction in lampworking glass for inclusion in kiln formed projects. Load and fire kilns.
Students to Bring: Pen, Safety Glasses, Pencil & note paper, fine felt pen, a clean cotton rag, such as an old tea towel and an oil filled glass cutter which can be purchased from Jon Firth's Unicorn Glass Studio 1/9 De Latour Street, Coconut Grove, NT.
