From Mangroves to Mudflats

29 May to 14 June

Opening at 5:30pm Friday, 29 May 2020 at Tactile Arts Gallery.

From Mangroves to Mudflats an Artist in Residence Exhibition by Aly de Groot

After plans of being an artist in residence at Tactile Arts in 2017 were unexpectedly interrupted, Aly’s creative career took a surprising turn and she moved to Groote Eylandt to work at the Art Centre there.

Mangroves to Mudflats is a navigation of places, familiar and new, emerging from the artists’ time living and working between Darwin and Groote Eylandt. Aly found inspiration in the mangroves thriving and surviving in mud and although Aly wasn’t an artist in residence in a traditional sense the exhibition carries a message of hope and resilience.

Experimentations with plant pigments and cyanotype processes (sun printing), along with weaving with marine debris has resulted in new works which emulate the sea-life and coastal environments found in the proximity of the Arafura Sea, weaving  the tragic tale of sea life in the plastic age.
