with Winsome Jobling

Papermaking can be a catalyst for bookmaking, printmaking and drawing, as well as an art form of its own.  This papermaking class walks students through the process of turning plant fibre into handmade paper and on to experimental ways of incorporating imagery into the wet sheet.

Darwin-based artist Winsome Jobling works primarily with handmade papers and experimental printmaking. She uses many local plants to make her papers, such as Spear Grass, Banyan Fig and the declared weed Gamba Grass and has been making paper since the early 1980’s.

With her paper forming the ground for her prints, Winsome’s work is a haptic collaboration with the natural world and a response to our impact on it. As she describes, ‘The images incorporated during the wet sheet-forming process are meant to both complement and complicate the ground of handmade paper. The works become an interplay between the method and the message about the nature of the human impact on the world around us.’

Students will learn how to choose suitable plant fibres and how to process them. They will form basic sheets of paper with a mould and deckle and then expand upon that skill by exploring ways to manipulate the pulp to integrate patterns and imagery into the papermaking process.

Suitable for all levels of experience.
