 with Aly de Groot

Weave your own bird from recycled marine debris with Darwin Artist, Aly de Groot. The body will be hand-woven from repurposed fishing-line, and the little head is a recycled take away soup spoon. Given current trends, it is estimated by natural scientists that 99% of seabirds will have ingested plastic waste by 2050. Learn several basket making techniques , including random weave and twining, whilst weaving the seas clean to make your own hanging sea bird.

This class is suitable for beginners but also an opportunity for those with experience to extend their practice.

Aly de Groot is a Darwin based fibre artist with over 20 years experience of sharing her passion for basketry across the NT as well as Nationally and Internationally in workshops and exhibitions in schools, universities, festivals and remote communities. in 2018 she completed her PhD at Charles Darwin University where her research question focused on contemporary basketry practices and environmental preservation. In 2023 she travelled Europe as a Churchill Fellowship recipient investigating endangered basket making techniques and avenues being taken to preserve this important knowledge.
