With Frances Ricketts

En Plein Air is a French phrase meaning ‘in the open air’, a mode of painting made popular by French impressionists. Fast shifting light compels speed and spontaneity, to produce sensual and expressive landscape studies refined in the studio to complete watercolour or acrylic paintings.
This workshop will visit the colour rich cliffs near Tactile arts. Sketches and watercolour studies can be done of both the harbour seascape and the colourful porcellanite rock of Darwin’s coastline from this location. The porcellanite stone of the NT cliffs comes in a variety of amazing colours, primarily white, yellow, red and purple. With the sea breeze and squawking gulls, the outdoor painting experience results in more subtle tonal qualities of colour, loose brushwork, and softness of form in the works. Choose to complete your painting in the studio using specialist watercolour materials or acrylic paints on canvas. The plein air painters will return from the field to the studio and bring their studies of the natural light, shade and colour to life in evocative and creative art works.
